Sophmore Dalton Durocher drew the start going 4 2/3 innings (3 K’s – 4 BB’s – 2 Runs – 2 Hits – 2 Singles. Freshman Payton Smith (2-0) finishes and gets the win (6 K’s – 3 BB’s – 0 Runs – 0 Hits).
Marist got on the board early with a walk and a couple of singles. The Hornets come back with a pair of singles from Matt Meeder and Drew Davis but are left stranded Hornets – 0 – War Eagles – 1.
Marist goes three up three down in the second. Dalton Durocher singles in right field. Payton Smith walks and Alex Hammen executes a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to second and third. Hornet runners are left stranded. Hornets – 0 – War Eagles – 1.
In the third inning Marist walks and takes second on a passed ball. Marist scores on an error. Matt Meeder singles up the middle but is stranded again. Hornets – 0 – War Eagles – 2.
In the fourth Payton Smith relieves Durocher, walks the first batter to load the bases but gets the strikeout to end the inning. Dalton Durocher hits a double to centerfield but is stranded. Hornets – 0 – War Eagles – 2.
In the fifth, Payton sits down Marist three up three down. Zach Hald hits a single on a nice hop over the shortstop and advances to second on a bad pick. Michael Ryan executes a sacrifice bunt and moves Zach over to third. Matt Meeder (1 rbi) gets a hit to right field to put the Hornets on the board. Sablich gets hit by a pitch but that is it. Hornets – 1 – War Eagles – 2.
In the sixth Payton strikes out three and walks one. In our half of the inning Payton gets on by an error on third base. Kurt Kaiser has a hit to right field. Smith and Kaiser both advance on a passed ball. Syd Hopkins pinch hits and draws a walk. Ryan Gant (1 rbi) grounds out to shortstop almost beating the throw. Smith scores from third to tie the game. In top of the seventh the Hornet defense holds. Steven Sablich draws a walk and John Albert pinch runs for him. Albert advances on a passed ball and then Alex Dickerson hits a fly to centerfield. Albert tags and gets to third. The Marist coach decides to intentionally walk Dalton Durocher and Payton Smith and pitch to Kurt Kaiser. On a 0-1 pitch Kurt drives the ball between 1st and 2nd to score the winning run. FINAL: Hornets – 3 – War Eagles – 2.
